Food is Ministry — Why What You Serve at Your Retreat Matters More Than You Think
How intentional, chef-designed menus transform retreat experiences — and why your kitchen team deserves a better plan
Something I don't talk about enough.
Long before MK's Table existed, Ken and I had a vision.
A retreat. A place where people could come and truly rest — away from the noise, the pressure, the relentless pace of life. A place of healing, connection, and closeness to the Lord. When He brought us to Montana in 2020, we knew this was where that vision would take root. We call it First Fruits — an offering of the best of what we have, given freely.
It's not built yet. We're trusting His timing.
But in the meantime, every menu we create, every table we set, every meal we plan through Elegant Meals Made Simple is part of that larger story. A way of being faithful with what we have while we wait on what's coming.
And it got me thinking about all of you — the retreat directors, the camp managers, the women's ministry leaders, the marriage enrichment coordinators — who are quietly carrying the weight of planning experiences that change lives.
You think about the speakers. The worship. The schedule. The accommodations. The counseling sessions and small groups and prayer times.
And then, somewhere near the bottom of the list, there's the food.
I want to gently, lovingly suggest that it deserves to move much higher on that list.
Food at a Retreat is Never Just Food
Scripture reminds us in Hebrews 13:2 that some who have shown hospitality to strangers have entertained angels unawares. We've always taken that seriously — and joyfully. Because the act of preparing a meal for someone, of thinking ahead about what they might need, of accommodating their body's unique requirements with grace and care — that is hospitality in its purest form.
And at a retreat, that hospitality sets the tone for everything.
Think about it from your guest's perspective. They arrive carrying something heavy. Maybe it's exhaustion. Maybe it's grief. Maybe it's a marriage that's been quietly struggling, or a spirit that's been running on empty for months. They've trusted you with something precious — their time, their vulnerability, their hope that this weekend might be different.
And then they sit down to eat.
That moment — that first meal — tells them everything about whether they are truly safe here. Whether they are truly seen. Whether someone actually thought about them before they arrived.
A beautiful, abundant, intentionally prepared meal says: you are worth this effort. You belong here. We thought about you.
A forgettable meal — or worse, a meal that doesn't account for dietary needs, that leaves someone sitting at the table unable to eat what's been served — says something very different.
The Hidden Stress Behind Retreat Meal Planning
Here's what I hear most often from retreat directors and ministry leaders:
"We just do potluck because it's easier."
"Our kitchen volunteers are wonderful but they're exhausted by day two."
"We never know how to handle all the dietary restrictions — gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, allergies — it feels impossible."
"We spend so much energy on the program that the food always feels like an afterthought."
I understand. Meal planning for a group retreat is genuinely complex. You're feeding different people with different needs, often with a volunteer kitchen team, often with a limited budget, and always with a thousand other things competing for your attention.
But it doesn't have to feel that way.
With the right menu — one that's been thoughtfully designed for your specific retreat, your kitchen team's capabilities, your guest list's dietary needs, and your overall vision — meals become one of the easiest parts of your weekend instead of one of the most stressful.
What a Custom Retreat Menu Actually Looks Like
When we design a menu for a retreat center or ministry event, here's what we consider:
Your guests. Who is coming? What are their likely dietary needs? Are you hosting women in their 60s or college students? Families with children or couples on a marriage retreat? The menu should feel like it was made for the specific people sitting at your tables — because it was.
Your kitchen. What are your kitchen's actual capabilities? What equipment do you have? How many volunteers will be cooking, and what's their skill level? A great retreat menu works WITH your team, not against them. We design for make-ahead preparation wherever possible so your kitchen volunteers can be present for the retreat experience, not chained to the stove.
Your budget. Elegant doesn't have to mean expensive. Some of the most memorable meals we've ever served were built around simple, seasonal ingredients prepared with intention and care. We help you make the most of what you have.
Your theme and vision. Is this a contemplative silent retreat? A celebratory women's conference? An intimate marriage renewal weekend? The food should echo the spirit of the gathering — a quiet, nourishing simplicity for one, an abundant feast-like celebration for another.
Dietary inclusivity. This is non-negotiable for us. Every guest at your table deserves to feel fully accommodated — not handed a sad side salad while everyone else eats a beautiful meal. We design menus where dietary adaptations are built in gracefully from the start, not bolted on as an afterthought.
The Difference It Makes
We've seen it again and again — when the food at a retreat is truly excellent, it becomes part of the story people tell when they get home.
"The speaker was incredible — and oh, the food. I couldn't believe how good everything was."
That's not a small thing. Word of mouth is everything for retreat centers and ministry events. When people leave talking about how beautifully they were cared for — body and soul — they bring others with them next time.
And your kitchen team? They feel it too. There is something deeply satisfying about cooking from a well-designed plan — knowing exactly what you're making, having the prep work organized, watching a meal come together beautifully for people who needed exactly that. It transforms volunteering in the kitchen from a chore into a ministry.
An Invitation
If you run a retreat center, coordinate a women's ministry, plan marriage enrichment weekends, direct a summer camp, or organize any kind of faith-based gathering where people sit down together to eat — we would be genuinely honored to help you think through your menu.
This is close to our hearts. It is, quite literally, part of the vision the Lord has been building in us for decades.
We don't offer a one-size-fits-all package. We sit with you, listen to what you're trying to create, and craft something that feels completely like your retreat — only more beautiful, more intentional, and far less stressful to execute.
Because when people are fed well, they feel loved.
And that is exactly what a retreat is all about.
