Bringing People Back to the Table: Why I Created Elegant Meals Made Simple
There is something that happens around a table that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.
We slow down.
We talk.
We laugh.
We listen.
We share stories, celebrate milestones, welcome new friends, comfort one another, and sometimes simply sit together after a long day.
And after forty years of cooking for family, friends, church gatherings, celebrations, and thousands of people along the way, I've come to believe something very strongly:
When people are fed well, they feel loved.
That belief is at the heart of Elegant Meals Made Simple.
For me, Christian hospitality begins with something wonderfully simple: making room at the table.
More Than a Meal
I have always loved cooking. I love taking individual ingredients and turning them into something beautiful. I love thinking about flavors, textures, sauces, side dishes, desserts, and how everything on the table works together.
But over the years, I realized that the food itself was only part of what I was creating.
The real gift was what happened around the food.
People gathered.
Relationships grew.
Conversations happened.
People felt welcome.
And that's when I began to see hospitality differently.
Hospitality isn't about having the perfect house or serving an elaborate meal. It isn't about impressing people.
Hospitality is making room for people.
Sometimes that means setting a beautiful table for a dinner party. Sometimes it means inviting a friend over for supper. Sometimes it means feeding someone who is having a difficult season.
And sometimes it is simply saying, “Come sit down. You belong here.”
A Biblical Picture of the Table
One of the reasons the table has become so meaningful to me is the picture we see in Acts 2:42.
The early believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer.
There is something beautiful about those four things being woven together.
Faith wasn't lived out in isolation.
They learned together.
They prayed together.
They fellowshipped together.
And they broke bread together.
The table has always been a place where people can connect.
And I believe there is something we have lost in our increasingly hurried world when meals become something we grab on the way to the next thing.
I want to help bring people back.
Back to the table.
Back to conversation.
Back to fellowship.
Back to making room for one another.
Why I Created Elegant Meals Made Simple
After decades in the kitchen, I also know something else:
Getting a wonderful dinner on the table can be a lot of work.
It's not necessarily the cooking that's difficult.
It's all the decisions.
What should I serve?
What goes with the main course?
How much do I need?
What can I make ahead?
When should I start?
What about the grocery list?
What about my guests who can't eat gluten?
What if someone doesn't like a particular ingredient?
And how do I actually sit down and enjoy the people I've invited if I'm still running back and forth to the kitchen?
That's where Elegant Meals Made Simple comes in.
My goal is to take much of that planning off your shoulders.
The Monthly Menu Experience
My primary offering is my Monthly Menu Subscription.
I don't simply give you a stack of unrelated recipes.
I create a complete dinner experience.
The courses are thoughtfully planned to work together, with flavors and textures that complement one another. Along with the recipes, I provide instructions, grocery lists, preparation tips, and guidance to help you know what to do ahead of time.
The idea is simple:
You shouldn't have to spend your entire evening in the kitchen while everyone else enjoys the dinner.
I want you to be able to prepare with confidence, sit down with your guests, and enjoy the meal you created.
Because you are part of the gathering, too.
Forty Years of Cooking — and a Husband Who Helps
I've been cooking for about forty years, and my husband, Ken, has been part of that journey.
Our kitchen has seen a lot of meals, a lot of people, and a lot of experimenting.
The easiest way to describe our partnership is:
Ken helps in the kitchen. I create.
I tend to be the one thinking about the menu, the flavors, the combinations, and how the entire meal should come together.
Ken is there helping, tasting, and doing what needs to be done to get dinner from the kitchen to the table.
After all these years, we've learned that feeding people is one of the simplest ways we can show them that we care.
Hospitality for Real Life
Not everyone sitting at your table eats the same way.
Maybe someone is gluten-free.
Maybe there is an allergy.
Maybe you're cooking for someone with specific dietary needs.
Maybe your guests simply have very different likes and dislikes.
That doesn't mean they should feel like an inconvenience.
I also create custom menus for dietary restrictions, preferences, special occasions, and gatherings.
Because my philosophy is simple:
Everyone deserves a place at the table.
A thoughtful menu can make someone feel remembered.
It can say, “I knew you were coming, and I planned for you.”
To me, that's hospitality.
This Feels Like a Calling
When I look back over the last forty years, I can see how God has used something I have always loved — cooking — to teach me something much bigger.
I don't believe Elegant Meals Made Simple is simply a business idea.
I believe it is a calling.
God has given me decades of experience in the kitchen, a love for hospitality, and a desire to help people create meaningful moments around a table.
Now I'm trying to take what I've learned and share it with other people.
Not because everyone needs to become a gourmet cook.
Not because every dinner needs to be elaborate.
But because I believe people need people.
And sometimes the simplest way to bring people together is to put something good on the table and invite them to sit down.
What's Coming Next
I'm also taking this message into books.
Several projects are now coming together, including The Elegant Gluten-Free Table and The Elegant Hosting Collection, with more books planned.
These books are another way for me to share what I've learned over the years — not only about recipes, but about planning, hosting, preparing, and creating meals that make people feel welcome.
And this is just the beginning.
Come Sit at Our Table
Elegant Meals Made Simple isn't about perfection.
It's about creating a reason to gather.
It's about making dinner an occasion.
It's about taking some of the stress out of hosting so you can actually enjoy the people you invited.
And ultimately, it's about something much deeper than food.
It's about fellowship.
It's about generosity.
It's about relationships.
It's about opening our homes and our tables to the people God places in our lives.
So if you've been waiting for the “perfect” time to invite someone over, perhaps this is your reminder:
You don't need a perfect table.
You don't need a perfect house.
You don't even need a complicated menu.
Just make room.
Pull up another chair.
Put something good on the table.
And invite someone to sit down.
Because sometimes a meal is much more than a meal.
Sometimes, it's the beginning of a relationship.
And that's why I created Elegant Meals Made Simple.
To help bring people back to the table.
Come sit at our table.
