Hospitality Is Ministry, Not Performance

I used to think hospitality meant getting everything right.

The table set just so. The food perfectly timed. Nothing burned, nothing forgotten, nothing out of place before the first guest walked through the door.

But somewhere along the way, I began to understand hospitality differently. Not as performance. Not as proving something. As ministry.

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." — Acts 2:42

Breaking bread together isn't listed as an afterthought in that verse. It sits right alongside teaching and prayer, as its own sacred practice. Feeding people well, welcoming them in, making room at the table: that's not the warm-up act to ministry. It is ministry.

That shift changed how I cook. It changed how I host. It's part of why Ken and I do what we do here — not to impress anyone, but to make room. A full table, a home-cooked meal, a place where someone feels genuinely welcome — that's still one of the most meaningful things we can offer another person.

If that's something you want to practice this week, I'd love to help you start.

At the end of the day, these recipes and plans are simply tools. What they're really for — what all of this is really for — is the moment when the plates are full, the chairs are pulled in close, and the noise of the world finally fades.

My prayer for you is that your kitchen becomes a sanctuary. That the mental load lifts. That you find yourself fully present, unhurried, and grateful — right there at your own table.
